Keystone 3 Pro Review: What Is It?

The Keystone 3 Pro is the third iteration of the flagship hardware wallet developed by Keystone, a Hong Kong-based company founded by Lixin Liu. This open-source wallet, released under the MIT License, provides a secure way to store your private keys in fully offline (cold) storage. By ensuring your private keys never come into contact with a computer or the internet, it minimizes the risk of theft or unauthorized access. The device incorporates several advanced security features to safeguard your assets, which we’ll explore in detail later.
Brief Keystone History
Lixin first encountered Bitcoin in late 2009 through an article on Google Reader. At the time, he found the concept fascinating but overly idealistic and didn’t act on it. Later, in 2013, during a startup project in Shanghai, Lixin revisited Bitcoin when its price surged. He bought a small amount on Mt. Gox but remained focused on other ventures.
By 2017, after leaving his role at a drone company, Lixin began exploring new opportunities. That year, he collaborated with Shenyu, a prominent figure in the crypto mining community, to develop a hardware wallet under the Cobo brand. This initial wallet was designed to meet the needs of miners and offered advanced security features.
Eventually, Keystone was established, evolving from these early efforts. The company is now recognized for its user-friendly, highly secure hardware wallets tailored to the needs of the Bitcoin and crypto community. Keystone’s emphasis on air-gapped devices and seamless usability reflects Lixin’s dedication to combining innovation with practical security solutions.
Keystone 3 Pro Main Features

The Keystone 3 Pro is packed with advanced security and user-friendly features, making it a standout choice for crypto enthusiasts. Here’s a breakdown of its key highlights:
- Open-Source Design: Keystone 3 Pro operates on an open-source platform, licensed under MIT. Both the hardware and software are fully auditable, ensuring complete transparency and trust in its security measures.
- Enhanced Security with Triple Secure Element Chips: This is the only cold wallet equipped with three independent security chips. Two of these chips isolate and protect your private keys, one the fingerprint data, and other sensitive information, offering unparalleled protection.
- Air-Gapped for Ultimate Safety: Keystone 3 Pro employs QR codes and Micro SD cards for completely offline data transfer, eliminating any connectivity risks from USB or Bluetooth. This air-gapped approach significantly enhances security against cyber threats.
- PCI-Level Anti-Tamper Mechanism: The device includes advanced anti-tampering technology. If tampered with or disassembled, it can trigger a self-destruct mechanism, erasing sensitive data to protect your crypto assets.
- Large 4-Inch Color Touchscreen: The 4-inch ultra-high-resolution LCD touchscreen offers an intuitive interface for managing transactions. The smartphone-like experience ensures readability and reduces the chance of errors during use.
- Shamir Backup Support: With Shamir Backup (SLIP39), users can split their recovery phrase into multiple shares for decentralized recovery. This method minimizes dependence on centralized solutions for security.
- Multi-Seed Phrase Management: Keystone 3 Pro supports up to three seed phrases. This allows you to separate wallets into categories, such as savings, daily transactions, or decoy wallets, for added flexibility and security.
- Fingerprint Authentication: Biometric security enables quick and secure access. Use your fingerprint to unlock the wallet or sign transactions, adding convenience while maintaining strong privacy safeguards.
- Passphrase Option: Users can add an additional passphrase, effectively creating a 25th word for their recovery phrase. This adds a customizable layer of security for protecting assets.
- Dice Entropy for Seed Phrase Creation: Generate a recovery phrase with true randomness by rolling dice. This method ensures better entropy and enhances the security of your seed phrase.
- Bitcoin-Only Firmware Option: At blockdyor, we’re all about Bitcoin, so it’s great to see the Keystone 3 Pro catering to Bitcoin enthusiasts with the option to install a dedicated Bitcoin-only firmware (more on this later) alongside support for thousands of altcoins & even NFTs.
- Anti-Blind Signing Protection: Keystone displays complete transaction details during signing, including smart contract information, to help prevent accidental errors or malicious activity.
How Does the Keystone 3 Pro Work?

Often referred to as a “hardware wallet” for simplicity, the Keystone 3 Pro is more accurately described as a “signing device.” While it doesn’t actually store your Bitcoin—because your coins are stored on the blockchain—it securely manages your private keys. These keys are stored offline, in cold storage, away from malicious attacks and prying eyes. The Keystone 3 Pro generates new wallets, restores existing ones, creates receiving addresses, and signs transactions to spend your Bitcoin. All of this is handled with a sleek design that feels like using a smartphone.
The Keystone 3 Pro excels with its airgapped design, taking this feature to a new level. Unlike other wallets, it doesn’t use USB data connections. The only way to sign transactions is via a microSD card or QR code camera. This ensures the device remains fully offline, offering heightened security. The included USB cable is solely for charging, and while data transfer via USB may be possible in the future, this setup reinforces the wallet’s focus on security.
The device features an internal battery, so you can use it unplugged—just like a smartphone. Its large screen allows you to easily verify transaction details on the trusted device display. Unlike some hardware wallets that require a dedicated companion app, the Keystone 3 Pro works with a range of third-party apps like bitcoin-only software wallets like Bluewallet, Nunchuck, Sparrow Wallet, and even multicoin solutions like Metamask. This adds flexibility and removes the reliance on a single company for both the software and hardware (the wallet vendor), improving future compatibility and security, especially if a manufacturer goes out of business.

Check out this short video we put together showcasing the Keystone 3 Pro wallet’s basic functions, along with its impressive design and durability.
Keystone 3 Pro Hardware Wallet Video: Unboxing, Features & ASMR Experience
Keystone 3 Pro Unboxing

Keystone ships its device in a sleek, compact box with an eye-catching blue electric and orange design.

The back of the device highlights its key features.

To open the box, peel off the plastic wrap and lift the security seal.

Inside the box, you’ll find some basic instructions right on top, along with a coupon code for a discount on future purchases from their store.

In the box is included an high-quality USB-C to USB-C cable.

At the bottom, you’ll find several recovery sheets for writing and storing your seed phrases and an adhesive that lets you repurpose the Keystone packaging into a hidden drawer for storing the wallet. Just remember—never keep your seed phrase in the same location as your hardware wallet!

You’ll also find a booklet with a quick start guide available in multiple languages.
Design and Build Quality

From the moment you take the Keystone 3 Pro out of the box, you can tell it’s well-built. The integrated battery adds a noticeable heft (around 100g in total), the plastic feels sturdy, and the overall construction is impressively solid.

The design resembles a smartphone from a few years back, with sharper, more geometric edges and a slightly bulkier design. The front is entirely button-free, featuring a 4-inch touchscreen that spans the entire surface. Its bright TFT display is probably one of the largest screens I’ve seen on a hardware wallet so far.

On the back of the device, there’s a camera for signing air-gapped transactions and a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the device or approving transactions if you don't want to insert the PIN everytime.

At the bottom of the device, there’s a USB Type-C port, which can be used to charge the internal battery or connect the device to a wallet if you prefer not to use it in the default air-gapped mode. The USB data connection is a feature that is coming soon.

On the left side of the device, there’s an SD card slot that can be used to sign PSBT (Partially Signer Bitcoin Transaction) transactions in an air-gapped setup. You can also update the device using this slot.

On the right side, there’s a single physical button, used for powering the device on (long press) or for sleep/wake functions.

How to Set Up The Keystone 3 Pro
Upon powering on the Keystone 3 Pro, the setup process begins with generating a PIN for the device and then a master seed phrase, which you’ll need to write down on paper. Let’s break down how this works.

Tap on the arrow to get started.

The first step is to verify the device. Follow the instructions to visit the official Keystone website, scan the QR code to obtain your verification code, and enter it on the site to ensure the device hasn’t been tampered with. While you can skip this step, it’s strongly recommended to complete it for added security.

The next step is to update the firmware. Keystone releases updates regularly, so the device you received might require an upgrade. You can update it using a microSD card or USB, with the option to verify the binaries for added assurance. However, this step can be skipped if you prefer.

Once the hardware and software have been verified, you’re ready to create a new wallet. Alternatively, you can import an existing wallet if you prefer.

Tap “I Understand” to acknowledge and proceed past the notice.

You will now be prompted to enter a PIN code, which is separate from your seed phrase and is solely for the device’s security. Choose a code you’ll remember, and if necessary, make sure to write it down for safekeeping.

Add a name to the wallet.

Now it’s time to generate your seed phrase, which acts as the master private key to access your funds. This phrase is crucial, as it allows you to recover your wallet even if the device is lost. Make sure to handle it with care.

At this step, Keystone reminds you to ensure no one is nearby and no cameras are present that could record you writing down your seed phrase. Keeping it private is essential.

The Keystone 3 Pro will generate a random seed using its internal entropy sources. By tapping the top-right corner, you can select either a 12-word or 24-word seed. The default is 24, but for simplicity in this guide, I opted for the 12-word option. Write down each word in the correct order (the order matters) on one of the papers provided by Keystone. Once finished, click the arrow to proceed to the next step and verify the words.

You’ll now be asked to confirm each word. This step ensures that you’ve written them down correctly and helps prevent any mistakes.

Confirm each word.

The secret will be now transferred inside the secure element of the device. Wait a few seconds.

The wallet has been now generated. The main dashboard is quite simple:
- Connect to Wallet: The button on the top right allows you to connect the Keystone, in an air-gapped manner, to popular wallets like Blue Wallet or Sparrow Wallet. Detailed instructions are provided in the app, but essentially, this feature exports the xPub to these wallets while keeping your private keys secure on the Keystone. Transactions are signed using PSBT technology without exposing your keys.
- Top Left Options: The top-left corner provides access to various device settings and options.
- Camera: Located in the bottom-right corner, the camera is used for signing transactions, scanning addresses, and other tasks.
How to Send/Receive Bitcoin/Crypto with the Keystone 3 Pro

After you’ve set up your wallet and added an optional passphrase, you’re ready to send and receive funds with your Keystone 3 Pro. The device relies on QR codes and its camera for secure transactions, keeping your seed words completely offline and out of reach from malware.
Receiving Funds
- Select a Receive Address: Choose the address you want to receive funds to within the Keystone 3 Pro.
- Generate QR Code: The device will display a QR code for the selected address.
- Scan the QR Code: Using your software wallet on your phone or computer, scan the QR code displayed on your Keystone 3 Pro screen to send funds to that address.
Sending Funds
- Create the Transaction: In your software wallet, set up the transaction you’d like to send.
- Export the PSBT: Once the transaction is ready, export it as a Partially Signed Bitcoin Transaction (PSBT) in QR code format.
- Scan the QR Code: Use the Keystone 3 Pro’s camera to scan the PSBT QR code.
- Sign the Transaction: The Keystone 3 Pro will sign the transaction with your private keys. You can secure this process using the fingerprint authentication feature for added protection.
- Generate a Signed PSBT: After signing, the Keystone will generate a second QR code containing the fully signed PSBT.
- Scan the Signed QR Code: Scan this second QR code back into your software wallet to broadcast the transaction.
Alternative Signing (for Bitcoin-Only Firmware)
If you’re using the Bitcoin-only firmware, you can also save the PSBT (Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions) to a microSD card and insert it into the Keystone 3 Pro for signing. This method further isolates your private keys from any potential online threats, adding an extra layer of security.
Keystone 3 Pro Review: Supported Coins
Keystone offers compatibility with a wide range of coins, tokens, and wallets, including Bitcoin, and even Bitcoin multisig setups. With support for Bitcoin (BTC) and over 5,500 altcoins and tokens across more than 200 blockchains, Keystone ensures that users can manage a diverse selection of assets securely.
Keystone’s multisig support for Bitcoin ensures enhanced security by requiring multiple private keys for transactions, providing an added layer of protection for users who prioritize Bitcoin security.
Bitcoin-only firmware

In addition to its multicoin firmware, one of the standout features of the Keystone 3 Pro is its Bitcoin-only firmware. This version streamlines the code base and reduces the attack surface, providing Bitcoin users with an extra layer of security and focus.
Upgrading to the Bitcoin-only firmware is a straightforward process. You can download the firmware and update it via a MicroSD card. Keep in mind that once you switch to the BTC-Only firmware, you won’t be able to revert to the multi-coin version.
The Bitcoin-only firmware also supports Testnet, a sandbox environment for Bitcoin, allowing you to test new features and transactions safely without putting your actual bitcoin at risk.
For added security, Keystone includes a Dice Entropy feature, where you roll a six-sided dice at least 99 times and record the numbers. These rolls are then used to generate a set of words for your seed phrase, ensuring true randomness and strong private keys resistant to brute-force attacks.
Keystone BTC-only firmware also supports multisig, a feature that increases security by distributing spending authority among multiple parties. With multisig, you can use hardware wallets from different manufacturers for extra protection, and Keystone makes this process simple and user-friendly.
Lastly, the Shamir Backup option offers another level of security by splitting your private key into several pieces. Even if you lose some shares, you can still recover your key. To maximize this feature, store each piece in a separate secure location, and consider sharing some with trusted individuals.
How to Buy the Keystone 3 Pro
You can buy the Keystone 3 with fiat currency or Bitcoin and other altcoins or even stablecoin from the official Keystone 3 Pro website. Is the Keystone 3 Pro Secure?

After thoroughly analyzing the Keystone 3 Pro’s security features and conducting our own independent research, we’ve found that it ranks highly in terms of security based on our metrics. Let’s take a closer look at the key features.
Data Privacy
The Keystone 3 Pro takes privacy seriously. It only retains user data for 180 days, which is far shorter than many other hardware wallets. Additionally, you can request to have your data deleted if you prefer, ensuring you maintain control over your personal information. For privacy-focused users, it's also possible to pay in Bitcoin and altcoins, increasing further more the privacy level.
Open-Source Firmware
Keystone 3 Pro offers full transparency with its open-source firmware. Covered by an MIT license, the wallet’s code is available for inspection, meaning there are no hidden or suspicious elements. This openness allows anyone to verify that the firmware is secure and hasn’t been tampered with, a key feature that sets it apart from many other wallets.
Secure Seed Generation
The security of your private keys starts with how they are generated. The Keystone 3 Pro uses two secure elements—Microchip ATECC608B and Maxim DS28S60—to generate random numbers. These numbers are then combined to create a unique and highly secure seed phrase. You also have the option to create your own custom seed phrase, further increasing the randomness and strength of your wallet’s security.
Safe Seed Storage
Once your seed phrase is generated, it is stored in the wallet’s secure elements, making it resistant to physical tampering. The seed is encrypted using a password-derived encryption key, ensuring that even if someone tries to access the wallet, they can’t extract your seed phrase without compromising both secure elements and your password. This multi-layered security offers robust protection against potential attacks. On top of that, the Keystone 3 Pro’s airgapped design ensures that even the most security-conscious users can rest easy, knowing their assets are protected.
Firmware Verification
Another important security feature is the ability to verify the wallet’s firmware. With the Keystone 3 Pro, you can verify the checksum of the firmware directly on the device, ensuring it hasn’t been altered or corrupted. This feature adds an extra layer of protection against threats like man-in-the-middle attacks or malicious updates, giving you peace of mind that the software you’re running is legitimate.
Keystone 3 Pro Price and Value for Money
The Keystone 3 Pro is competitively priced, and Keystone frequently runs sales, so you’re likely to snag a discount at some point. That said, the wallet’s specifications are impressive for its price.
It features a large touch screen, includes a rechargeable battery, and comes with everything you need straight out of the box. Plus, with our special code, you can save an additional 10% on top of any ongoing discounts, making it even more affordable.

Keystone 3 Pro Alternatives
It's reasonable to draw comparisons among Bitcoin-only, Airgapped compliant hardware wallets, and the most fitting alternatives seem to be the Coldcard and the Blockstream Jade.

Coldcard MK4: Despite the Keystone 3 Pro's superior usability, enhanced by features like the battery, camera, and a user-friendly interface, the Coldcard MK4 offers additional functionalities not present in the Keystone 3 Pro. These include NFC, Seed XOR, and several other features. However, the Coldcard lacks a battery and camera like the Keystone 3 Pro, and being a source-available only system, users need to consider these factors. For further insights, you can explore the Coldcard MK4 Review.
Blockstream Jade: The Jade, priced significantly lower than the Keystone 3 Pro, stands out as a cost-effective alternative. Equipped with both a camera and a battery, it shares these features with the Keystone. However, the user interface, in comparison, falls short, primarily due to a lower-quality screen and usability. Navigating and inputting information on the Jade may prove less efficient than on the Passport, where operations are notably faster. Despite these differences, the Keystone 3 Pro supports SeedQR, a feature recently integrated into the Keystone 3 Pro. Furthermore, its firmware receives impressive updates, maintaining an airgapped design and extending support beyond Bitcoin to include liquid assets. For additional infos, have a look to our comprehensive Blockstream Jade review.

Bottom Line: Is The Keystone 3 Pro Right For You?
I believe the Keystone 3 Pro is a solid choice for a wide range of users. Its intuitive design makes it easy to use, and while it doesn’t offer the ultra-paranoid features of something like a Coldcard, it’s far more user-friendly and supports multiple cryptocurrencies, not just Bitcoin. For Bitcoin maximalists, switching to the Bitcoin-only firmware is simple and lets you focus exclusively on BTC.
That said, I do have some reservations about this device for ultra-long-term holders (>10 years). The non-removable battery could pose an issue down the line—when it eventually fails, you’ll need to either replace the entire device, send it to Keystone for servicing, or transfer your seed phrase to a new wallet (likely the easiest & safest option).
One of the standout features is its airgapped design, which not all manufacturers fully embrace. Keystone’s dedication to this approach reflects a level of thoughtfulness and commitment rarely seen in the industry—something I’ve noticed in only a handful of companies.
